Dr. Abner Carey, Jr



Dr. Abner Carey, Jr. was born February 23, 1944, in Winchester, Virginia. He is the second son of the late Abner Carey, Sr and Isabella Carey of Boyce, Virginia. Reverend Carey is a product of the Clark County Public School system.

He accepted the Lord as his Savior at the age of twelve and was baptized by the late Reverend Fermon Talbert, pastor of the Zion Baptist Church in Boyce, Virginia and founder of the Way of the Cross Baptist Church, Washington, District of Columbia.

Reverend Carey was an active member of the Sunday school Department, Junior Treasurer, Junior Deacon and a member of the Junior Choir until leaving the area in 1962.

In 1964, Reverend Carey met and later married the former Rachel Ricks of Fairmont Heights, Maryland. To this union three lovely daughters was born: Rosalita, Shelia and Blythe. Upon accepting his calling, on January 28, 1983, Reverend Carey preached his initial sermon: Acts 27:25 " I believe God."

He received his licensed to preach on the same day from the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia, under the leadership of Dr. Carroll Baltimore, Sr. On June 9, 1986; Reverend Carey graduated from the Washington Baptist Seminary.


As a student, Reverend Carey was Class President and was keynote speaker for the Class Night Celebration.

In May 2000, Reverend Carey received his Masters of Divinity from Faith Bible College and Seminary. After receiving his Masters, Reverend Carey continued his studies and on May 13, 2001 received his Doctor of Ministry from Faith Christian University.

On June 29, 2001, Reverend Carey retired after 33 years of service from the United States Postal Service.

In September of 2001, Reverend Carey was installed as the second Pastor of the New Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
