THE HISTORY OF NEW GROVE MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH

The New Grove Baptist Mission was organized under the leadership of the late Reverend Pheo Gaither in May of 1983. The first service was held at 4408 Bowen Road, Southeast, Washington, District of Columbia. The first five members were Eva Mae Gaither, Ettie Champion, and Rilla Smith now Rilla Gaither, Lottie Toliver and the late Willie Gaither. Also present, were Deacon O'Neal and the late Reverend Edmonds.

The mission grew and was organized into a Missionary Baptist Church. Under Reverend Gaither's leadership and perseverance, the church leased the storefront property at 4917 Georgia Avenue, Northwest, Washington, District of Columbia. On May 30, 1983, the first service was held and the church rapidly grew.

There the seeds of love, hope, fellowship, achievement and many other attributes of Christianity were sown. From this sowing, ministries were organized and acting officials appointed. With the continued growth of the church, it became apparent that it was time the congregation purchase a church building. Again, with the leadership of our pastor and great faith in the Almighty Father, New Grove secured the property at 801 44th Street, Northeast, Washington, District of Columbia. We continued to praise the name of Jesus, most often with standing room only. On May 22, 1994, the members of New Grove, along with approximately 250 friends and relatives blessed the Benning Road corridor of Kenilworth praising God with the songs "We've Come A Long Way Lord" and "Come Along My Friend, Come Along," as we marched into our new and present home.   What a Mighty God We Serve!

We shall never forget Minister Lester Paulin, Deacon Willie Gaither, Deacon Willie Harris, Trustee Eva Champion, Trustee Johnnie Champion, Sr. and Deaconess Martha Lloyd who served faithfully until the Lord called them home.

As the Lord told Moses on top of Mt. Pisgah in Deuteronomy 34:4, "This is the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac and unto Jacob, saying, I will give it unto thy seed: I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over thither." We are reminded of how often times, Pastor Gaither would tell of a vision wherein he'd see people in New Grove standing around the walls because the church was so full. We are reminded of Job as we think of Pastor Gaither. He continued to serve God throughout his illness and he never doubted. And like Moses, Pastor Gaither went to Glory according to the will of God.

And like the children of Israel in Deuteronomy 34:8, "And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days: so the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended." New Grove's church family did mourn. But having such a close relationship with Pastor Gaither and knowing what he would want, in addition to the direction of our chairman, we ended our period of mourning and took care of the business at hand.

Thanks be to God for His never-ending guidance. It was God who arranged for Joshua to be successor to Moses, and it was God who arranged for Pastor Carey to be successor to Pastor Gaither, as written in Joshua 1:1-2, "Now after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord it came to pass, that the Lord spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' minister saying, Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel."

On Sunday, July 15, 2001, at a special called church meeting moderated by the Deacon Edmond Robbins, Jr., the members voted unanimously that Dr. Abner Carey, Jr., to become the 2 nd pastor of the New Grove Missionary Baptist Church.   On Sunday, September 9, 2001, Dr. William Gibbs of the Antioch Baptist Church installed Pastor Elect Carey as the 2nd Pastor of New Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Since Pastor Carey began his work at New Grove, God has lifted us to new Spiritual Horizons.   In September 2004, only 10 years after the purchase, God blessed New Grove to host their mortgage burning. The church membership has increased in numbers, spirit, love, and finance.   We presently have 17 ministries and 6 choirs.   We are blessed with 5 Deacons, and 4 Trustees.   We currently have a Deaconess Ministry consisting of  11 members. The church consists of over 200 members.   Pastor Carey has organized new ministries such as the Media Ministry, the Girl’s Ministry, Young Adult Ministry, the Bereavement Ministry and instituted Wednesday’s Noon Day Prayer.   Pastor Carey also awarded the first scholarship from the Pheo Gaither Scholarship Fund.   With Pastor Carey’s foresight, we anticipate many positive changes that will lead us forward to greater spiritual heights.

The Legacy continues

We, the members of the New Grove Missionary Baptist Church are truly indebted to Pastor Carey, a man who says “Follow me as I follow God,” and by so doing, we can look back today and say, look how far God has brought us.   Thank God and…Thank you Pastor Carey.

We cannot in a moment reach perfection

However, we may be certain we shall scale the heights,

If we rise a bit each day, the tallest mount we climb

One Step at A Time!!!!!
